How To Select The Right Medical Plan From Your Choices

Today’s consumers usually have health insurance choices in the US. None of these choices may be cheap or easy to understand, but we do get choices! How can you get help picking the right type of health insurance for yourself and your family members?

What Are Your Health Insurance Choices?

Examine Medical Plan Choices

Your first step will be, of course, to examine the options you have.

Do you get a group plan at work? If you get some choices at work, you will probably have to decide between a few different plans your employer offers.Other employees or your company benefits person can be good sources of information. Just remember that your own personal situation will not be the same as that of somebody else.

If you purchase your medical plan on the individual market, you may have many more choices. Again, we love choices, but this can make the task of selecting the best individual health insurance a hard job!

In the case of people shopping for private plans, it can really help to find out which plans are on the market where you live. Adjust benefits like copay amounts and deductibles to get an idea of the premiums you may have to pay. Then figure out which benefits you really need to protect your family. Try to eliminate any benefits that are just “nice to have”, but that you can live without.

In your case, you may want to get insurance quotes online. This can help you compare several different companies, and their different plans, all in one place. The web is full of information, and a good quote system can be a great way to sort it all out.

Pick Out Important Benefits

You have to figure out why you need health insurance in the first place. Mostly, it should be to protect you from a financial or health catastrophe. This means that you may be willing to pay for some minor costs once in awhile in order to save money on your premiums every month!

Best Health Care Insurance

What Is The Best Health Care Insurance?

There is not one easy answer to this question. If there were a simple solution, perhaps we would only have one health insurance company and our legislature would not spend so much time debating the issue. You own right solution will depend upon your unique situation when you are seeking coverage.

  1. Does your employer have a group medical plan? If so, you will probably find that this is the cheapest way to get good coverage. Most employers pay a percentage of the premiums. Federal laws also have mandates protecting workers. If you can get covered through your job, give this strong consideration.
  2. Can you find a job that provides medical benefits, if you need them, and do not already have them? Employers know that a group health care plan is a big draw for good employees. Some small companies cannot afford the cost though.
  3. Can you qualify for, and afford, a private medical plan. If you are self-employed or work for a company without group benefits, you may need to cover yourself. There are dozens of alternative plans in most market and millions of Americans find that an individual policy works out well for them.
  4. If you were declined by a private insurer, check out your state high risk plan. Each state, and now the US federal government, has some sort of plan to cover people who were declined for private coverage. In some states the premiums can be expensive and not everybody qualifies. Things should be getting better with the new federal plan. Most people can deduct these premiums from their taxes too.
  5. If you have a  low to moderate income, you may qualify for low income health care. Some examples of this are Medicaid, CHIPS (Children’s Health Insurance), county hospital systems, and low income clinics. Look for resources in your own city, county, or state. PPARX.org is a good resource.

Best Health Care Solutions

There is not one right answer to the problem of finding the best way to afford good health care.  The solution may be out there, but it may take some research to find it. You can do a lot of research from your home or work PC with an Internet connection.

Private insurers, government health programs, and most charities and foundations, all have web sites. There are some groups, like PPARX.org, which provide a portal so you can get information about many types of services if finances are an issue.

The important thing is to figure out how you can access medical care and services before the problem becomes a financial or health crisis!

Health Insurance Providers In Texas

List of Health Insurance Providers In Your Texas City

Keep in mind that the available health insurance providers will differ if you live in Austin, Dallas, Houston, or another Texas town or city.  Your premiums can vary quite a bit too as most Texas health insurance has rates charts that are based upon zip code. That means that you could pay more (or less) then your nighbor on the other side of the street who happens to live in a different zip code.

Top Health Insurance Companies In Texas

There are so many ways to rate an insurer, but US News & World Report published a ranking. The rankings reflected how effective a company was at controlling and preventing disease, and also by customer satisfaction report. They used a 5 star rating system, and no company got 5 stars in every category. They also used a numerical scale. This may be a starting point for you if you need to select major medical insurance.

Top 10 Texas Health Insurance Companies

  1. Humana Health Care System of Texas (Austin, Tx)
  2. CIGNA Healthcare of Texas
  3. Scott and White Health Plan
  4. AETNA Health – Texas
  5. United HealthCare of Texas
  6. Humana Health Care System of Texas (South)
  7. Pacificare of Texas (Austin / Dallas)
  8. Humana Health Plan of Texas (Houston)
  9. Pacificare of Texas (San Antonio / Houston)
  10. Missouri Health Plan of Missouri (Texas)

Note that some insurers, like Hamana and Pacificare were rated for specific regions. Others that did not have cities or regions noted may not market in all areas. A top list like this is, again, a starting point. But you really need to be able to find the active in insurers in your own area. For example, we only had one entry on the list for San Antonio, while Houston was listed twice. Other major cities were not mentioned on the list. Our zip code health insurance quote form (on the right of this page) is one simple way to accomplish this.

Texas High Risk Pool

The Texas Department of Insurance (http://www.tdi.state.tx.us/health/index.html) regulates companies in the state. If you are declined for insurance in the state, you could consult the Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool. Not everybody qualifies, and premiums are fairly high, but this provides a safety net.

Texas Low Income Health Insurance

If you cannot afford premiums, you may get some help from Texas Medicaid or the Texas Childrens Health Insurance Plan (CHIPS). Medicaid covers people with very low incomes and very few assets. The guidelines for the children’s plan are more relaxd and many moderate income families can get their children covered.  CHIPS also covers pregnant women now.

More Help With Health Plans

The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPARX.org) has a handy zip code search for more resources. Beyond just helping people pay for medication, it helps people find low cost clinics, financial aid for people with specific health conditions, and more.

Compare Health Insurance Providers

How To Compare Health Insurace Providers

We all want to be able to purchase the best health insurance for ourselves, and for our families. Of course, we have to work within our budget, the policies that are on the  market in our local area, and some other important considerations. Health insurance companies are not all the same, so it is very important to consider some very important things before you commit to a medical plan.

  • Type of Health Plans – For example, do you know the differences between PPO, HMO, and HSA health insurance? It is very important to understand your medical plan so you know how it works when you do have to use it.  For example, an HMO may be great if you live an area with a big network of plan medical providers. But you may prefer the flexibility of a PPO health plan if you want to be able to get services from a doctor who is not in a network.
  • Cost Vs. Benefits – You might want a medical plan with very comprehensive benefits like low doctor’s office copays and deductibles. But the premium may be so expensive you will not be able to afford it after awhile. It may be better to buy health insurance with less coverage and a cheaper price. You will have to put aside some cash in a savings account so you will be able to afford any copays or deductibles you have to pay.  The premium difference between the same basic policy with a $500 yearly deductible and one with a $2,500 deductible will be signifigant. If you can afford to pay that $2,500 if you need to make claims, you can probably save hundreds of dollars every year you do not have high medical expenses.  In addition, you can probably save quite a bit if you choose health insurance with a higher copy, or even one that does not offer office visit copays at all. You will have to pay for the doctors visits, but you may save 25% on your monthly premiums.
  • Customer Service and Claims Record – You also need to do some research on the insurer. It will not do you any good to save a few dollars on your monthly bill  if your company does not have your back when you need to use them. You can visit your state insurance department or consumer protection websites to look for complaints.
  • Shop Around For Health Insurance – It used to be very time consuming and frustrating to compare health insurance providers. But these days, online quote forms make this a lot easier. You only have to enter your basic information one time. Then you can sit back as the top insurers in your local area present you with competitive plans and policies.
  • Declined for Health Insurance – Right now, you can still be declined for private medical insurance in the US. But every state has some sort of high risk health insurance plan that may help. In some states, not everybody qualifies and the premiums can be quite high. You may need to find some low income medical insurance options.
