Health Insurance Providers In Texas

List of Health Insurance Providers In Your Texas City

Keep in mind that the available health insurance providers will differ if you live in Austin, Dallas, Houston, or another Texas town or city.  Your premiums can vary quite a bit too as most Texas health insurance has rates charts that are based upon zip code. That means that you could pay more (or less) then your nighbor on the other side of the street who happens to live in a different zip code.

Top Health Insurance Companies In Texas

There are so many ways to rate an insurer, but US News & World Report published a ranking. The rankings reflected how effective a company was at controlling and preventing disease, and also by customer satisfaction report. They used a 5 star rating system, and no company got 5 stars in every category. They also used a numerical scale. This may be a starting point for you if you need to select major medical insurance.

Top 10 Texas Health Insurance Companies

  1. Humana Health Care System of Texas (Austin, Tx)
  2. CIGNA Healthcare of Texas
  3. Scott and White Health Plan
  4. AETNA Health – Texas
  5. United HealthCare of Texas
  6. Humana Health Care System of Texas (South)
  7. Pacificare of Texas (Austin / Dallas)
  8. Humana Health Plan of Texas (Houston)
  9. Pacificare of Texas (San Antonio / Houston)
  10. Missouri Health Plan of Missouri (Texas)

Note that some insurers, like Hamana and Pacificare were rated for specific regions. Others that did not have cities or regions noted may not market in all areas. A top list like this is, again, a starting point. But you really need to be able to find the active in insurers in your own area. For example, we only had one entry on the list for San Antonio, while Houston was listed twice. Other major cities were not mentioned on the list. Our zip code health insurance quote form (on the right of this page) is one simple way to accomplish this.

Texas High Risk Pool

The Texas Department of Insurance (http://www.tdi.state.tx.us/health/index.html) regulates companies in the state. If you are declined for insurance in the state, you could consult the Texas Health Insurance Risk Pool. Not everybody qualifies, and premiums are fairly high, but this provides a safety net.

Texas Low Income Health Insurance

If you cannot afford premiums, you may get some help from Texas Medicaid or the Texas Childrens Health Insurance Plan (CHIPS). Medicaid covers people with very low incomes and very few assets. The guidelines for the children’s plan are more relaxd and many moderate income families can get their children covered.  CHIPS also covers pregnant women now.

More Help With Health Plans

The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPARX.org) has a handy zip code search for more resources. Beyond just helping people pay for medication, it helps people find low cost clinics, financial aid for people with specific health conditions, and more.
